This Bauernwerhr has a blade of tempered EN45 high carbon steel with a thick spine and rigid blade. Its hilt has a highly durable and robust full-tang construction created when the grip scales were steel riveted to the thickened blade tang. The grip halves are carved and polished ebony hardwood and the bolster halves and side-mounted nagel are of steel. Instead of straight slabs, the grip wood was skillfully worked into a form which widens toward its end to neatly couch the grip comfortably and securely in the hand. Included is a pair of byknives of sharp, tempered steel with grip of brass and polished horn which are brass riveted to the thick tang. Included with the Bauernwehr is a companion sheath of double-layered vegetable tanned leather with stitched construction. Leather lacing cord allows for it to be fastened to your belt or gear. The Bauernwehr is a distinguished style of medieval hunting and working knife that saw widespread use from the late 14th to the early to mid-16th centuries. This robust blade was particularly favored in the German, Swiss, and Bohemian regions, though its popularity extended beyond these areas. Often adorned with byknives, this style features a practical stud for easy removal from its secure scabbard. Similar knives are well-represented in museum collections and prominently depicted in the works of Gaston Phoebus and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Characteristically sturdy, these knives frequently include a knuckle pin or nagel, underscoring their dual purpose not only as tools but also as effective weapons in combat.
